The Bladen and Columbus Alumni of North Carolina A&T State University recently announced for scholarship winners, each of whom will receive a $500 scholarship toward their college education.

The four winners are:

— Nicholas Godfrey, the son of Annette and Larry Godfrey of Chadbourn. He is a graduate of West Columbus High and plans to major in electrical engineering. While attending West Columbus, he was a three-sport athlete — participating in football, basketball and baseball.

— Mia Campbell, and East Columbus High graduate, is the daughter of Melody Campbell and the late Michael Campbell. She was a National Honor Society member and an avid athlete — playing basketball, volleyball and soccer while also a member of the cheerleading squad. He college major will be social work.

— Destinee Simone is the daughter of Borisce and Bridgette Singletary of Bladenboro and a West Bladen High graduate. She plans to major in biology. While at West Bladen, he was a member of HOSA and earned a certificate as a nursing assistant.

— Michaela Sanders, the daughter of Michael Sanders and Anita Ryans, is a graduate of East Columbus High, where she served as a cheerleader and participated in band, basketball and choir. She has already completed a year at A&T.

The winners of the prestigious Johnny Peterkin Scholarships are Godfrey and Campbell.

Peterkin was a president of the Alumni Association and instrumental in reconnecting the Aggie Alumni within the two counties of Bladen and Columbus. His wife Tillie still resides in the area.
