Writer defends Republican members of the BOE

Concerning the editorial shaming the Board of Elections, I have a few observations.

I have attended some of the “rambunctious” BOE meetings. The conclusions you drew are understandable in light of what one may see in isolated meetings and the difficulty one has in hearing the proceedings, but I do not believe they are correct concerning Mr. Aycock and Mr. White. Based on the most recent BOE meetings, you said that you had seen “no attempts” by these gentlemen to find “common ground” with the three Democrats.

The “common ground” is the Election Statutes.

When Mr. White and Mr. Aycock are dealing with the three Democrat board members, one should assume that the two of them determine what point in the law they are seeking to clarify, and that one or the other “carries the discussion” to avoid confusion. They are both fine, successful, intelligent gentlemen, and well respected in our county. To say that Mr. White is “no use at all” is very unfair, since you are most likely not privy to what goes on behind the scenes with those two men as they strategize on how to find “common ground” with these ladies.

To imply that Mr. Aycock is deliberately “pushing” buttons, when he is trying to initiate a discussion in order to correct perceived violations or misinterpretations of the election law is unfair. It is the duty of all the board members to understand and follow the direction and intent of the law.

Sincerely,

Jane T. Pait
