DUBLIN — West Bladen senior Nicole Wyatt has received her share of accolades during her high-school career, and she recently capped off her four years as a Lady Knight with another one — the Mountaire Farms/Civitas Media Scholar-Athlete Award for June.

Wyatt was chosen from a number of nominations within Bladen, Robeson and Scotland counties. She was chosen by a vote of the sports editors at the Bladen Journal, The Robesonian and the Laurinburg Exchange.

As a monthly winner of the award, Wyatt will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and was presented with a trophy and banner. The award is a testament to Wyatt’s accomplishments in the classroom and on the softball field.

In the classroom, Wyatt was set to graduate 17th in a class of 151 with a 4.25 weighted GPA. She is a member of the West Bladen Beta Club.

On the field, Wyatt has received all-conference recognition, has been selected an MVP, conference Player of the Year, and District Pitcher of the Year in softball. She was named to All-Tournament team for the Robeson County Slugfest her sophomore and junior years, and she was the Lady Knights’ senior captain.

“While coaching Nicole, I have been impressed with her determination and work ethic,” said West Bladen softball coach Pam Stephens. “Nicole is very competitive and is willing to work hard to win. She understands the importance of teamwork and gets along well with her teammates and coaches.”

In addition to her work in class and on the softball field, Wyatt has also volunteered at the National Guard Armory to feed the veterans and at Southeastern Health to help construct a walking trail.

“Nicole has the biggest heart,” Stephens said, “and plans to pursue a career in the medical field.”

Wyatt recently signed a letter of intent to play collegiate softball for Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., where she plans to major in biology/pre-med.”

As the Lady Knights’ starting pitcher over the past two seasons, she has compiled a record of 32-14 and helped West Bladen to qualify for the state’s Class 2-A East playoffs each year.
