Lady Knights duo falls twice, but gains berth at state championships

GOLDSBORO — Saturday proved to be a tougher day for the West Bladen doubles team of Conner Brisson and Savannah Lee, but there was good news at the end of the day.

The Lady Knights’ duo, one day after winning their first- and second-round matches, fell to a tough N.C. School of Science & Math in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1, in the third round of the Mid-East Regionals.

In the consolation match later in the day, Brisson and Lee fell to a team from Bartlett Yancy in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1.

“They played outstanding on Friday and, unfortunately, today did not go our way,” said West Bladen coach Mary White, who was also the director of the Mid-East Regionals, “but they will still compete in the state championship tournament as one of the top 16 seeds in the state for the 2-A schools.”

Brisson and Lee earned the No. 4 seed out of the regionals and gained a berth in the state’s Class 2-A championships in Cary on Friday.
