EAST ARCADIA – The Bulldogs of Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy remained the lone undefeated Bladen County varsity basketball team Tuesday, knocking of visiting Alpha Academy 48-30 at East Arcadia School.

The win improved the Bulldogs to 3-0.

Tiding a pair of three-pointers from T.J. Smith and a pair of buckets by Marvin Lacewell, Paul R. Brown raced out to a quick 12-4 lead. Despite a three-pointer from Marquese Robinson, Alpha finished the first quarter with a 5-3 run to cut the deficit to 15-9 going into the second quarter.

The two teams traded points through the period, but the visitors won the quarter 9-7 to go into halftime trailing by just 22-18.

Alpha continued with the momentum after halftime, using a 7-3 burst to open the third quarter and knotted the game at 25-25 before the Bulldogs began to pull away. Lacewell buried a three-pointer for Paul R. Brown and Zarian Brown canned a couple of buckets to lead the Bulldogs on an 8-0 run to finish the quarter with a 33-25 advantage.

Coach Ken Cross’ Bulldogs owned the fourth quarter with a 15-5 run behind six points from Gary Mason and two baskets from MyKell McKoy to seal the win.

Lacewell led Paul R. Brown with 11 points, while Mason was right behind with 10. The duo of Smith and Brown each scored eight points for the winners, and Robinson contributed seven points.

The Bulldogs won’t play again until Monday, Jan. 8, when they travel to face their toughest challenge in New Life Academy.
