Early hole dooms Lady Knights again

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Lady Knights found themselves in familiar territory Thursday against Wallace-Rose Hill on the second day of the East Bladen Holiday Classic. Behind early. Big.

A late-game push managed to get the game respectable, but West Bladen fell to the Lady Bulldogs, 56-46, and moved to 2-8 overall this season.

“It’s the story of our season so far — fall behind and try to fight back,” said West Bladen coach Brian McCleney. “

The lady Knights opened the game with a 4-2 off a pair of baskets from Elizabeth Allbright, but the Lady Bulldogs finished the first quarter with an 11-0 burst that sent them into the second stanza with a 13-4 lead.

North Brunswick opened the period with an 8-0 run before Chasitty Lacey got a put-back basket and then a three-pointer to pull the Lady Knights within 21-9 — but the Lady Bulldogs went on an 11-0 eruption to finish the half and take a 35-13 advantage into the intermission.

West Bladen put together some adjustments at halftime and began a rally early in the third quarter. Allbright canned a pair of baskets and Kasee Singletary dropped in a free throw to pull the Lady Knights to within 37-18.

Wallace-Rose Hill answered with a mini 4-0 run, but Singletary bombed in a three-pointer and added a free throw, Carley Dawson added two buckets and got the Lady Knights within 43-26 after three quarters.

Two quick baskets for West Bladen — one each from Lacey and Mikayla Winebarger — cut the deficit to 43-30 and the run continued for a 12-3 burst that whittled the Lady Bulldogs’ advantage to 46-36. But Wallace-Rose Hill went on a 7-2 run to regain control and open a 53-38 margin.

West Bladen got a trio of buckets from Dawson over the final 3:30 to fuel an 8-3 run but it was too little, too late.

“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” McCleney said. “Carley had a good fourth quarter and Elizabeth also played well. Now we’ve got a few days off before we come back with three games.”

Allbright led West Bladen with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Dawson also scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Lacey contributed 10 points and had five boards. Winebarger and Scjada Ellison each had six rebounds.

The Lady Knights will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 2, when they travel to face St. Pauls in a Three Rivers Conference game.
