BASEBALL: Eagles rip South Rob, 8-1; Stallions blank West, 11-0

ROWLAND — Ty Watkins hurled a four-hitter, Shy Pone blasted a home run and Greyson Heustess belted a double and triple to help lead visiting East Bladen earn an 8-1 Three Rivers Conference win over South Robeson on Friday.

After a scoreless first frame, Pone led off the second inning with a solo home run and, moments later, Watkins ripped a double and Pierce Melvin slapped an RBI single for a 2-0 Eagles edge.

Two scoreless innings followed, but in the fifth inning, East Bladen plated a trio of runs for a 5-0 lead when Sincere Smith dazzled the East Bladen crowd and frustrated the Mustangs with a walk and three straight steals to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. A passed ball led to another East Bladen run and Pone replicated Smith’s antics moments later with a single and three straight steals for the final run of the inning.

In the sixth, Smith smoked a double and Heustess followed with a run-scoring double for a 6-0 Eagles advantage.

Pone led off the seventh with a walk and didn’t need to steal a base. Instead, he scampered home on Watkins’ RBI double, and Holden Clark slapped an RBI single to give East its final run.

South Robeson ruined the whitewash with a two-out, RBI single in the home half of the seventh.

Watkins earned the win on the hill for the Eagles, pitching a compete game and giving up four hits, two walks and fanned five.

At the plate, Watkins was 3-for-4 with two doubles; Pone was 2-for-3 with a home run and three stolen bases; Heustess was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI; Melvin was 2-for-4 with an RBI; Smith had a double and three stolen bases.
