CERRO GORDO — East Bladen built a 6-0 lead against West Columbus and weathered a late Vikings rally to knock off the No. 2 team in the Three Rivers Conference on Tuesday, 6-3.
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second behind two walks and an RBI single by Brady Hollingsworth.
The two teams locked up in a pitchers’ duel over the next three innings before East Bladen erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth. Ty Watkins produced an RBI single ahead of the Eagles loading the bases and Spencer Scott lofting a sacrifice fly for a run. Sincere Smith got an RBI on a fielder’s choice and, after a walk, Xavier Wooten laced a run-scoring single for a 6-0 advantage.
West Columbus began a rally in the bottom of the sixth — fueled by three walks, two passed balls and a hit batter — and cut the deficit to 6-2. The Vikings added a run in the seventh, but could get no closer.
Watkins earned the win on the hill, working five-plus innings and giving up four hits, six walks and struck out six. Wooten finished up the sixth inning before Pierce Melvin pitched the seventh to seal the win.
At the plate for the Eagles, Gabe Barber was 3-for-4; Hollingsworth was 2-for-2 with an RBI; Wooten was 2-for-4 with an RBI; and Smith had two RBI.
East Bladen will go on the road for a Three Rivers Conference game at Fairmont on Friday at 7 p.m.
