ELIZABETHTOWN — In his debut start on the hill for East Bladen, Zach Meares hurled a complete-game seven-hitter to help lead the Eagles to their seventh straight win — a 10-0 mercy-rule whitewashing of visiting South Robeson in a Three Rivers Conference game.
East Bladen improved to 11-9 overall, 10-7 in the conference.
After two scoreless innings, the Eagles got on the board when Sincere Smith singled, stole second and third — coming home on a bad throw.
In the fourth, East Bladen erupted for five runs when Brady Hollingsworth ripped a double, Meares beat out a bunt to put runners at the corners and Freddie Wooten walked to load the bases. Smith followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. Greyson Heustess blasted a double that brought Wooten home and Smith scored on a fielder’s choice. Gabe Barber then singled for a another run and a 6-0 advantage.
In the fifth, a hit batter and four walks led to two runs and gave the Eagles an 8-0 lead. Moments later, Heustess laced a two-run single to finish the game on the run rule.
At the plate, Smith was 2-for-2 with three RBI and two stolen bases; Barber was 2-for-3 with an RBI; and Heustess was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
East Bladen will host West Bladen on Friday in a conference game at 7 p.m.
