DUBLIN — West Bladen’s bid for a dramatic upset to the Three Rivers Conference race for postseason dual team playoff berths was thwarted Wednesday, but just barely.

The Knights lost to South Columbus 5-4, leaving three teams — including the Stallions — tied at 12-4 in the league. Whiteville won the league at 16-0, and all of the 12-4 teams harbor hopes of landing a postseason spot. A tie-breaker is expected to be carried out by the league.

Down 4-2 to start doubles play, the Knights pulled off victories at Nos. 1 and 2. Seniors Jose Hernandez Osorio and Eduardo Carranza were 8-4 winners in the top spot and senior Victor Arellano and junior Logan Lewis prevailed 8-5 at No. 2.

Senior Mark Flores and junior Tristen Sadler were denied 8-5 at No. 3.

In singles, Osorio won 6-1 and lost 6-2 before taking the tie-breaker 10-4. Arellano was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 2.

Lewis fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3, Carranza was beaten 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Sadler dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 5 and Flores was turned back 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Knights ended the year 3-13 in the league and overall. Osorio will advance to the regionals in Graham after the Easter holiday break.
