WHITE OAK — A hog truck overturned over the weekend on Gum Springs Road, which runs from N.C. 242 into White Oak, by the post office.

“The driver ran off the road to the right,” said Trooper Demetri Anders. “The trailer broke off at the front, and overturned.”

The call came in around 7:10 p.m. Sunday night.

“The driver went too hot into the curve,” said Trooper Ronnie Walker, who was also on the scene.

The road has a few curves that are more difficult to maneuver, even though the road is 55 mph.

“The curve has a posted suggested speed of 35 mph,” he said, adding that that suggestion does not apply to commercial vehicles, but just to cars.

“If you are going into a curve like that at 55 mph and your trailer starts flying on you, you are pretty much doomed.”

The truck was carrying 184 hogs, and an estimated 120 were dead. Some of the hogs were caught while others were left behind.

The driver was not injured. No charges have been filed, Anders said.
