Volunteers are being sought in Bladen County, and throughout the state, for the annual Adopt-A-Highway Fall Litter Sweep.

The state Department of Transportation, in a release, says it happens Sept. 11-25. Volunteers are asked to help remove litter from roadsides.

The opportunity has been used by businesses, schools, nonprofits, churches, municipalities, law enforcement and community groups.

In Bladen County, commissioners periodically hear about troublesome areas. A program at the Sheriff’s Office involving inmates has helped.

Trash bags, gloves and safety vests can be requested and obtained from DOT county maintenance offices.

COVID-19 protocols are encouraged. DOT says anyone diagnosed or recently exposed to the coronavirus should not participate.

In the release, engineer David Harris said, “Since this year began, NCDOT and our partner organizations have picked up more than eight and a half million pounds of litter. We need everyone’s help to keep that momentum. The Litter Sweep is a great opportunity to get outdoors with family and friends and work alongside NCDOT to ensure North Carolina remains a beautiful place to live and work.”
