U.S. Citizens Living in North Carolina Are Eligible to Vote

Raleigh, N.C. — The State Board of Elections released the following statement in response to reported confusion among some naturalized citizens about their eligibility to vote.

North Carolina residents: if you are a citizen of the United States, will be at least 18 years old by Election Day, and are not serving a felony sentence, you are eligible to vote.

It does not matter if you were born a U.S. citizen, or were naturalized or acquired citizenship. And it does not matter if you are a citizen, but your family members are not. Citizenship is citizenship, and it pertains to you.

The State Board of Elections welcomes all eligible voters to make their voices heard at the polls.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 5. Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Voters should go to their assigned polling place on Election Day. To find your polling place, use the State Board’s Voter Search tool.

The following was sent via email from Wayne Schaeffer of the Board of Elections:

“FYI! Important to note that Hispanic voters are suddenly showing up at the polls—at the last minute, despite 17 days of available early voting. We are seeing reports of Guatemalan and Venezuelan individuals showing up to vote, but not all of them have proof of citizenship, OR of legitimate photo ID. This is a problem. If you see voters showing up and trying to circumvent the photo ID requirement (which they can), then it is important that they sign a photo ID exception form, and THAT ballot should be handled as provisional—not arbitrarily run thru the tabulator. If you see this sort of thing going on, initiate an incident report, and forward it to the county Board of Elections. OR, if you know how to do this using your cell phone, do it digitally, and forward your report with your concerns to the NCGOP hotline reporting link.

I have EVERY suspicion that—on Tuesday, the final day of voting—we will see instances and incidents of certain persons attempting to vote that are NOT legitimate citizens, or who are not otherwise qualified to vote.

Also—keep an eye out for persons who repeatedly are ‘assisting’ voters coming in. The polling site should be keeping a log on who these people are, but since we have already noted the same individual doing it—time and time again—it is clearly questionable, and leads to suspicions that that individual is ‘leading’ the voter to vote a certain way, and/or actually marking their ballot for them.”
