ELIZABETHTOWN — One person died Oct. 17 following a crash on N.C. 242, and a second person involved in the crash died Monday.

Trooper Ronnie Walker said that the collision was called in at 4:27 p.m. It happened 5.1 miles north of Elizabethtown.

A 2017 Kia driven by Abigail Riana Dixon, 18, of Kelly, went left of center while traveling southbound, and the left front hit the right rear of a 2003 Mustang, Walker said. The Mustang was driven by Shawarn Zaryck Melvin-Jones, 22, of Roseboro.

A third vehicle, driven by Carol Ludell Brewington, 75, of Clinton, was also involved. She was driving a 1984 Chevrolet van.

The Kia hitting the Mustang caused the Mustang to hit the van head-on explained Walker.

“Mevin-Jones was deceased at the scene,” said Walker. “Brewington passed away Monday from her injuries.”

Brewington had been taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she underwent multiple procedures.

The official report has not been released by the Highway Patrol.

Three charges have been filed against Dixon: speeding, improper equipment and driving left of center. More charges may be filed after the investigation is complete, Walker said.
