ELIZABETHTOWN — Bladen County was spared from a deadly tornado overnight Monday into Tuesday.
Nathan Dowless, director of Emergency Services for the county, confirmed in a text message about 7 a.m. he had not been made aware of any damage from the severe weather that passed through the area. Temperates Monday were gloomy and in the low 40s with persistent rain and drizzle, while Tuesday was significantly warmer.
According to published reports, a tornado was confirmed in Brunswick County that killed three and injured 10. It happened just after midnight near Shallotte.
Brunswick County Emergency Services early Tuesday said an estimated 50 houses were affected. Most damage was reported in the Ocean Ridge Plantation neighborhood of Ocean Isle Beach. The area is only an estimated 30 to 40+ miles, “as the crow flies” across the Green Swamp Preserve, from the Riegelwood community and the southern tip of Bladen County.
Brunswick County Schools closed for the day. Many areas were without power.
