ELIZABETHTOWN — A body was found Monday afternoon floating in waist-deep water of a pond on Mercer Mill Brown Marsh Road, which is off the N.C. 87 bypass around Elizabethtown.

Sheriff Jim McVicker, through a news release, identified the man as 54-year-old Rick Stringfield of 3096 Mercer Mill Brown Marsh Road. The pond where he was found is in the 2800 block.

Lawmen said a 911 caller about 4:30 p.m. reported a body floating in a small pond behind a residence. Investigators said Stringfield had not been reported missing before the call was made, and was last seen on Saturday afternoon.

The Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of the death, the release said. There were no signs of foul play when the body was recovered.
