Community college career and job fair brings exciting opportunity

DUBLIN — Bladen Community College and the county’s NCWorks Career Center hosted a Career and Job Fair on Tuesday in the college auditorium, giving the public and students a boost in finding employment.

“This year we had over 40 vendors,” said Sondra Guyton, vice president of Workforce and Continuing Education with the college.

Vendors included a wide variety: local law enforcement, medical entities and big-name businesses like Murphy Farms and The Chemours Company.

“I’m actually enrolled here at Bladen Community College,” said Tara Lewis. “I’m trying to do the licensed practical nurse and registered nurse program.

“I am really just interested in seeing what they to offer here at the career day, because I like having my options open.”

Lewis took a minute to talk about those options with Emily Kaminski from Davis Healthcare of Wilmington.

“This is giving me a good opportunity to open my options and look at different career choices,” said Lewis. “I am really excited.

“This is my first time coming to a career fair at Bladen Community College. I have really enjoyed everything, like how they have had the different displays set up and the different variety of everything.”

Kaminski said she has been working at Davis for about a year.

“It’s great being here,” she said. “I always enjoy telling people about the opportunities at the Davis Community because it is a fabulous place to work.”

Lewis was interested in learning from Kaminski about their the nursing home, and how it offers a household model of care, over a traditional style of nursing home.

Representatives from Chemours were on hand to answer questions about their plant, which is on the county line separating Cumberland and Bladen.

Jesus Ramos was among those who spoke with Rod Scurry and Tim Blackburn.

“I am just out here to see what kind of jobs are out there,” said Ramos. “This is the third one I have been out to.”

He said the first career fair he went to was in high school.

“I come out here every year to see what’s new and what jobs are offering, and the opportunities for students,” said Ramos, who has an associate’s degree.

“I’m hoping to get into law enforcement,” Ramos said.

“We have been doing this about 15 years,” said Katrina Harbison of NC Works.

Organizers said the early part of the event was packed. Students from the county’s high schools were among those that came by the event, which was also open the public.
