ELIZABETHTOWN — For about five years, Bladen County officials have been touting the CodeRED information system for residents throughout the county. Now, they are making another push to get more residents signed up.

“If someone wants to stay informed about important situations in the county, this is the best way to do it,” said Nathan Dowless, director of the county emergency services.

To date, the CodeRED system has between 8,000 and 10,000 residents signed up.

According to Dowless, the CodeRED system is used by the county departments to let residents know about water main breaks, fire hydrant flushing, fires, tornado warnings and more.

“The system allows us to target certain groups in the county that we need to notify, or we can notify everyone who signs up if need be,” Dowless said. “It can be sent by email, text or landline telephone.”
